The evaluation process of the International Medis Awards is done by the independent International Scientific Committee of ten reputable doctors and pharmacists from eight countries. They select nominees, finalists and winners for each research field.

Each committee member is selected based on their extensive expertise and experience in their respective area of work. To ensure objectivity and incorporate fresh scientific insights, the committee members serve limited terms of three years and the new committee members for the mandate period 2024–2027 were appointed this June.

The evaluation process consists of two rounds:

  1. evaluating basic criteria and
  2. panellist evaluation.

In the initial round, the Committee conducts an assessment to determine if the submitted work aligns with the basic criteria. These criteria encompass several aspects, such as authorship, including the number of authors, the impact factor of the publication or journal (IF – Journal Citation Reports database), and a country pondering system. This pondering system is established by considering variations in intramural research and development expenditures per researcher across different countries during a specified reference period (GERD). The aim is to ensure equitable conditions for researchers from diverse nations.

Qualified applications advance to the second phase, during which they are assessed based on additional criteria. These include clinical importance (an evaluation of potential contribution of the research to diagnosis and treatment), novelty (introduction of substantially important technologies and/or methods) and type of medical research.

The final score is calculated based on points from each parameter in both phases of the evaluation. The complete scoreboard can be viewed here and the call for entries can be viewed here.
